Travel Beauty Bag: The Essentials

Content Beauty founder Imelda Burke shares her green beauty must-haves for holiday with G4AS

Editing down my beauty ‘essentials’ is the most time consuming part of preparing for any Summer holiday. Packing for me is mostly about picking a product for every occasion rather than an outfit. But over the years I managed to whittle down the products I pack to a regular selection that covers most beauty eventualities.

Prior to holiday I increase the body brushing and scrubbing to smooth out skin and then pack the body brush – it’s more portable than a jar of body scrub and is an easy way to get a full exfoliation on holiday.

For the plane everyone needs a couple of products to ward off inflight bugs, I always pack an organic hand sanitizer (the mainstream versions are so drying on the skin) and a multi-tasking aroma-therapeutic elixir which helps boost the immunity and clear the sinuses. Once landed a mineral sunscreen is a must and I always pack a targeted organic serum that includes ingredients to help reduce sunspots – look for seaweed on the label.

A golden tan seems to be the norm for holiday skin, but if you don’t like to bake in the sun try a tinted moisturiser for the body, it gives a sun-kissed tint without the UV damage or streaks of fake tan. Hair protection is also important too – UV rays damage the hair and fade colour so I pack a travel size of a sun spray for hair.

Last but not least! I never leave home without my favourite multi-purpose balm. It’s made from 28 plant oils and butters and is the ultimate holiday skin saviour. Find out which products make the cut for any green travel beauty bag:

Hydrea Professional Dry Skin Body Brush
The Body Brush
This is perfect for dry body brushing and exfoliating the skin prior to holiday. With regular use it improves circulation and skin tone. Made from FSC Certified Beechwood it will give your skin a spa quality detox to soften skin and stimulate the lymphatic system, £9.75

Nathalie Bond Body Scrub
The Scrub
A body scrub with a strong exfoliating action is my favourite pre-holiday ritual. I only go for biodegradable ones and this contains organic and wild-crafted ingredients. Lately I’ve been switching between the Peppermint & Eucalyptus Body Scrub and Ylang Ylang and Bergamot Body Scrub, which are made from fair-trade organic sugar, £17.50

De Mamiel Altitude Oil
The Essential Oil
Nothing is worse than arriving on holiday and finding you have caught a cold on the plane. Keep travel bugs at bay with this multi-tasking elixir which helps boost your immune system – a few deep breaths of this lovingly created, sensory blend of plant oils throughout a flight counteracts a multitude of modern day inflight malaises, Oil £26.00

Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum
The Serum
Hyperpigmentation a problem? This organic serum is my weapon of choice to help protect skin from sun damage preventing sunspots. I’ve noticed a big reduction in the amount of pigmentation I get on trips home to sunny New Zealand and it can even be used as a light moisturiser in warmer weather, £80.00

Jao Goe Oil
The Body Oil
I never go anywhere with out Goe Oil. It’s the most delicious blend of 28 plant, fruit and flower oils. Scented with Monoi from Tahiti this oil is absorbed quickly leaving skin feeling incredibly smooth. It’s the perfect multi-purpose product for holiday. Use it on cuticles, as a make-up remover or as a body balm – I love to use it as a night oil, £35.00

Prtty Peaushun Skin Tight Body Lotion
The All-over Glow
A tinted moisturiser for your body – yes it exists! I use this instead of fake tan to create that holiday glow. This clever lotion comes in five colours so you can choose your level of colour to fake your holiday tan. Pack it as it also works a treat as an after-sun soother too and luckily comes in a travel-friendly pouch, £33.00

Intelligent Nutrients Certified Organic Hand Sanitizer
The Sanitzer
I keep this in my carry-on luggage to ward of inflight bugs and then transfer it to my beach bag. It smells delicious and leaves hands clean and feeling not sticky or stripped but soft and hydrated with a whopping 99.9% of bacteria eradicated, £8.00

Less is More Lindengloss Finishing Spray
The Hair Spray
I spray this on hair to protect it from the sun and tame frizz. I’m a huge fan of the organic ingredients, which include nourishing wheat germ oil, which protects against UV, heat and colour fading and as an added bonus it smells delicious. No one wants to lug around a whole bottle of styling products on holiday, so I pack the travel size! £7.50

John Masters Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF30
The Sunscreen
Sun protection is about more than just SPF. Sun hat, avoiding the peak hours of 11am and 3pm and a mineral sunscreen is the magic trio. For face, I love the John Masters SPF30 as it’s packed with antioxidant green tea with hydrating shea butter and jojoba oil and doesn’t leave a white pallor, £28.50

Certified Organic Bug Repellent Serum

100% DEET free this serum is more of a perfume, skillfully crafted to attract humans while at the same time repel biting and stinging insects. It’s so much nicer than the unpleasant smelling, citrus and citronella scents we have grown to expect – I take it on every holiday come summer, £16.00
