This month, look out for Organic Beauty Week – an initiative hosted by Soil Association as part of their ‘Organic September’ month. Taking place between the 14-20 September, it aims to grow awareness of the industry by encouraging consumers to make a change to their beauty routine and ‘go organic’.
When Content Beauty first opened in 2008, the more premium organic beauty sector in the UK was still at its infancy, so it’s very encouraging to see that consumers are becoming increasingly ‘green’ in their beauty choices. In 2015, organic beauty is less ‘niche’ and more ‘in’ than ever!
However, this comes with a price: “organic” has become the buzzword in beauty, but it doesn’t always stand true. Unlike organic food, there is currently no legal standard in place for organic beauty, although normal trading standards law should prevent false claims being. Sadly, ‘greenwashing’ is all too common and you can easily find products claiming to be organic with either tiny amounts or no organic ingredients in them at all! This is obviously misleading to the customer, and it also begs the question – what other ingredients do these products contain?
Clearly as far as industry standards go, there is still much progress to be made. So if you’d like to support organic beauty, why not make a change to your beauty routine this month? Start by looking out for products with legitimate certification kite marks from the likes of the Soil Association. Certifiers work to standards such as COSMOS, which provide detailed requirements on ingredients and manufacturing processes, meaning the quality and values that organic embodies are preserved. This way you can be sure that the products you’re using are truly organic and genuine.
