It’s easy! Let your skin breathe and detox your skincare with this tried and tested guide.
Choose different products at different times of the year
We are creatures of habit and routine and don’t always use the right products at the right time of year. Our lives are constantly in motion and so too is our skin. The effects of different seasons, the lifestyle we lead, hormones and frequent travel all have different impacts on our skin. Think about the season and your skin’s needs and go from there. In winter when harsh wind, central heating and cold air all deplete moisture from our skin you may want to use an oil-based cleansing balm but in summer pick a foaming cleanser.
Go back to basics – strip away products which don’t support your skins needs
It’s important for skin health that you don’t use too many products or the wrong products, as your skin is constantly trying to rebalance. If you apply products which aren’t suited to your particular skin type you are setting yourself up for self-created sensitivities, congestion and an aggravated complexion.
Cut out the chemicals
We have become accustomed to using products with too many chemical ingredients. We all like a quick fix but often these products can really throw your skin’s natural mechanisms into disarray and your natural moisturising factors and barrier function become depleted which leads to perpetual dryness and dehydration. You need to work with your skin, not against it. Choose a brand which avoids using synthetic fragrance and colour, mineral oils, sulphates and paraben preservatives. There are much more efficient, high-performance ingredients available from natural non-chemical sources.
You don’t always need night cream
You may feel your skin has been a little congested and needs to breathe and so you don’t want to apply a heavy night cream. Cleanse your skin every evening but think about applying a light serum instead of a dense cream. I only use overnight cream if I feel like my skin is in need of it. Sometimes I only use it every third or fourth night.
Exfoliate once a week
Exfoliating is particularly important, it is not just all about layering on serums and moisturisers continuously. Weekly exfoliation is crucial to regularly shed dead surface cells to remove dry skin and stimulate new cell metabolism. It is only by sloughing away the dead cells that you can allow your product to penetrate deeper into the epidermis where it is needed.
Do a home facial
I recommend doing a home facial once a week. Massage a facial oil like Argan, Sacha Inchi oil or Rosa Mosquetta, into the skin to help shift toxins, stimulate circulation and improve lymphatic drainage while promoting radiance.
Maintain a healthy diet
Healthy vital skin comes from eating well and a good lifestyle and using skincare that addresses your needs not overwhelms it. Diet can suffer, particularly in the wintertime or when it is cold as we veer away from fresh raw fruit and veg towards stodgier options. Make sure you keep up your vitamin intake and tuck into plenty of nourishing protein-rich stews.
