The Summer welcomes us with longer days, warmer weather and a radiant golden glow. In terms of Ayurveda, it is the season of the Pitta dosha which governs heat, metabolism and the digestive system of our bodies.
For this, a self-care routine based on kind intention and breathing techniques will be the best practice for cultivating a strong mind and naturally beautiful skin.
As you wake up in the early and bright hours of the morning, keep your eyes closed for a few minutes and practice being fully present. Listen to your body, breathing deeply in to nourish every little space and breathing out to clear your mind and letting go of any heaviness or pain. When you start to feel balanced open your eyes and continue taking steady breaths, establishing this positive relationship between you and your body so that it can give you strength throughout the day.
Perhaps the most important element in maintaining electrolyte balance and youthful looking skin is to stay hydrated. When you are outside in the heat you should be consuming about three liters of water a day. If you are falling short try coconut water or supplement with aloe vera juice, if you are still finding it difficult to quench your thirst try adding a touch of rosewater to add some aroma and slight bitterness.
In Summer, simple sun salutations will help you be more joyful, less fearful, and set a healthy balanced tone for the day to come. Other poses to incorporate into your practice are hip-opening asanas like Pigeon pose and Bound Angle to calm stress and cool down heat from the body. If you would like to further your experience of release try some Pitta oil on your temples and chest to help open the heart.
It’s difficult to recommend the details of what will be beneficial for just about everyone during the summer months, but in general it’s important to eat light. Most for breakfast, less for lunch and, while we enjoy the late night evenings, eat little for dinner. Fresh fruit, salads, natural sweets and healthy oils are the best for balancing the heat of your Pitta. Our favorite Summer side salad is a raw spiralized courgette with toasted pumpkin seeds and a tahini, lemon and turmeric dressing – ready, set, go!
Pay It Forward Attitude
At work and off work, join a charity or volunteer in an organization to support people around you by giving your time and energy. It will make you feel good to be needed, to help by just simply being there, and soon you will be radiating your inner light outwardly.
It’s scientifically proven that focusing on what we’re grateful for brings more good and happiness into your life. Write down three things before bed that you are thankful for – appreciating a healthy body and mind – even the sunshine or refreshing summer rain- remembering not to take the small things for granted.
